Decorating With Bringing The Outdoors In Christmas

The silver sparkles of frost, the green spikes of holly and the rustic woodiness of fir cones make the outdoors automatically full of natural Christmas festivities in winter. Bring some of them indoors with these idea on how to decorate your home with Christmas nature.

1. Create a striking tabletop display by filling a vessel with cones, dried orange slices, lichen and sprays of scarlet berries.

2. Cover a wreath base of florist's foam or a twig wreath with branches of spruce. Spray with fake snow and finish with a decorative flourish by wiring in more spruce, cones, berries, cinnamon sticks and box sprigs.

3. A crate planted with early forced bulbs makes a perfect arrangement for a porch or a garden room where the abundance of light and cool conditions will encourage them to flower. Simply line an old fruit crate with plastic - a bin liner will work well - cover with compost and top with cushion moss. Plant forced bulbs at intervals to create the effect of a miniature garden. Finish with decorative seed heads, lichen or appropriate Christmas decorations.

4. Group galvanised metal buckets filled with seasonal greenery around an entrance to eye catching effect.

5. Fill a pot with sweet-smelling hyacinths contrasted against the wiry green stems of broom. You could force these bulbs in time for winter or buy pre-forced ones, which will flower soon after purchase. To finish,  drill a hole through a piece of textured bark, spray with snow and hang from twine.

7. These tiny trees have been sawn from old reclaimed wood. Plant into metal pots filled with lichen and reindeer moss.

12. For an original decoration, cover a circular willow base with dried hydrangea heads and finish with dried apple slices (you can buy these or dry your own in an oven at a very low temperature).
